Your Smashing Book has been printed!

Hello Robin Malau,

Your Smashing Book has been printed! It is currently en route to our shipment facility, where it will arrive in mid-November. Because not much can go wrong now — unless the ship gets seized by pirates :) — we expect no further delays and can finally announce a shipping date:

Monday, 23 November 2009

Again, we are very sorry for the delays. We would like to offer you a little appetizer as you wait just a little bit longer: the first chapter of the Smashing Book. You can download it as a PDF:

Chapter 1: User Interface Design in Modern Web Applications

We decided to focus on continuing to deliver great content rather than devise an elaborate content protection scheme. So, the file is not protected. This download is meant as a goodie for people like you who have put their trust in us. Please feel free to spread the link to the file if you want to.

Also, to give you a taste of the finished Smashing Book, here are some pictures:

Finally, we would like to respond to some frequently asked questions:

First of all, no, we did not take your money and set out for the Cayman Islands. :)

Many people have asked for the reasons behind the delays in production. For one, our schedule was just a bit too optimistic. We didn’t allow enough time for the usual delays that happen with every project, like missed deadlines by third parties. We also ran into some layout problems, because the book turned out to be a bit longer than originally planned. So we decided not to rush things, and we made sure that even with the additional pages, your Smashing Book would look marvellous. The second major delay was caused by the unexpectedly huge demand. While we were, of course, very happy about everyone's interest in the Smashing Book, the print shop needed an additional two weeks for the increased number of orders.

Another thing that confused some people (rightfully so) was the status of their order, which they could see if they registered for an account at our store. This information is currently a bit misleading. We are in the process of printing the invoices so that we can ship the book as soon as it arrives at our shipment facility. The problem is that this process flags the book as having already shipped, even though it hasn’t. You will receive another newsletter once your Smashing Book has actually shipped.

Thanks again for your support, trust and patience. This project would not have been possible without them!

With greetings from Germany,
Vitaly Friedman

New at gdgt / October 2009

We've been hard at work on new features here at gdgt -- features users like you have been requesting! And we've got a lot more coming soon, but here's a quick peek into some of the stuff we've been up to.

Friend finder

gdgt

If you're like us, you use Gmail, Twitter, or Facebook (or all of the above) to keep up with friends. Well now you can use those services to find your friends on gdgt (or invite them if they're not already here). We've got more Twitter and Facebook integration coming really soon.

Head on over to our new friend finding tool and we'll get you connected to your people.

Personalized social feed

gdgt

Want to see even more of what's going on? Just follow more people and add more gadgets to your lists, it'll immediately begin to appear in your stream. Getting a little too much information? That's no problem either, just hit the customize button and tweak your feed settings, it'll be updated instantly.

So make sure you've added some gadgets, found some friends, and check back on that social feed!

10,000 gadgets and New Category Tuesdays!

gdgt

Thanks to the enormous efforts of the gdgt community, we're happy to share that as of October there are well over 10,000 products in our database (and growing daily). But don't stop: plunder those archives and closets, and keep helping us plug in gadgets new and old. We want 'em all!

If you've stopped by lately you might have also noticed just how many new categories we've added. We'll be launching more each week, so keep an eye out, New Category Tuesdays are on! Twitterfeed grows up: publishes in real-time, and to Facebook!

Hi, just a reminder that you're receiving this email because you subscribed via Twitterfeed. As promised, we'll only send emails about important updates and information relevant to your account, but you may unsubscribe (link deleted) at any time.
We've Grown Up...

Dear publishers,

Twitterfeed's been busy; find out what we've been doing:

Faster more reliable publishing for everyone,Pubsubhubbub real-time publishing for enabled sites,Publish to Facebook!,Google Analytics Integration
Twitterfeed has grown pretty fast since its early side project days. There are now 350,000 publishers from the White House to CNN to John Cleese pumping out almost 600,000 feeds and generating around 5,500,000 clicks to your sites every day.

Faster, more reliable publishing

Dealing with such a flood of traffic on a service meant that Twitterfeed has had reliability issues; at times the system would simply get overwhelmed. Over the last few months we've been building a completely new architecture designed to handle the millions of posts we publish to Twitter and beyond each day.

We're starting to roll out this new architecture today and this means that Twitterfeed should be able to publish feeds much faster than before. It will take a few days for us to move all the feeds over safely, but the result will be your posts reaching your audience when you want them to.

Pubsubhubbub real-time feed publishing

Twitterfeed now works with Pubsubhubbub. This means that sites enabled with Pubsubhubbub, like Typepad and Blogger sites, will be able to see their posts published in real time! We'll shortly be announcing support for RSScloud too, so that wordpress sites can also be published in real time. You can find out more about pubsubhubbub here.

Publish to Facebook!

You can now automatically publish to Facebook from Twitterfeed. What's more, you'll see statistics for each post showing you just how many people clicked on posts from Facebook vs those from Twitter. You'll be able to better understand just where your social media strategy is working.

Google Analytics Integration

Twitterfeed now adds special 'UTM' tags to each post that it publishes. Google Analytics can read these tags and integrate the information into its reporting. You'll be able to understand how people clicking on your posts from Facebook differ from those clicking from Twitter and track the complete path of their visit to your site.

We hope you like the improvements and new features; you should log in and see how Twitterfeed can help your content spread across the social web!

Very best,

Mario, Tony and the Twitterfeed team

Hello Robin Malau,

We are still working hard to deliver your dearly awaited Smashing Book to you as soon as possible. Because of the huge demand for the book and some layout problems (the book will now have 12 pages more than announced), we experienced some production delays along the way. Because the Smashing Book is our first book, we did expect some problems but not this many.

We sincerely apologize for the delay in delivery, and we will of course make sure that your copy of the Smashing Book is shipped to you as soon as it comes off the press. We expect shipping to begin mid of November. The book is already being printed. One benefit of pre-ordering the book is that you will be among the first to get it fresh off the press! Of course, we will keep you updated on our progress with printing and shipping. Please stay tuned.

Now, to give you some insight into the printing process, here are some photos from the printing house, along with a digital proof that was sent to us two weeks ago.

Photo of a heap of proof prints.
Proof prints being cut.
Endless stream of proof prints.

Thank you for your patience and tremendous support! We'll make the wait worthwhile. In the meantime, continue enjoying the steady stream of insightful articles online, courtesy of yours truly, Smashing Magazine.

With greetings from Germany,
Vitaly Friedman
